About This Watch
Combining a professional diving watch with a chronograph has always presented the watchmaker with an acute tension between the functional demands of each complication. The chronograph requires sub-registers that reduce legibility under water; the diver requires a unidirectional bezel that the chronograph's pushers can interfere with; both require water resistance that traditional chronograph architectures struggle to maintain. Ulysse Nardin's Diver Chronograph resolves these competing requirements through the Calibre UN-150, a self-winding movement whose architecture places the 30-minute, 12-hour, and small seconds registers in a tri-compax layout chosen for maximum legibility contrast against the black dial at depth.
The 44 mm stainless steel case provides the structural rigidity necessary to house both the chronograph mechanism and the water-resistance provisions of a serious diving reference. The rubberized black unidirectional rotating bezel offers the tactile grip essential for elapsed-time measurement through neoprene gloves, while its unidirectional design prevents accidental anti-clockwise rotation that could misrepresent remaining air supply. The screw-down security crown is flanked by chronograph pushers engineered for operation at depth — each sealed with its own gasket system to prevent water ingress through the case-band. The black dial presents maximum contrast for the white-tipped hands under varying light conditions.
The rubber strap with titanium elements is a thoughtful detail: titanium brings structural rigidity to the deployant buckle and hardware without adding weight, while the rubber body provides hygienic, salt-resistant performance in repeated aquatic use. Titanium elements also ensure galvanic compatibility between dissimilar metals in a marine environment, preventing the corrosive reactions that plague lesser strap-and-hardware combinations. At $9,560 the Diver Chronograph 44 mm is the definitive expression of Ulysse Nardin's thesis that professional tool watches and serious horological complications need not occupy separate categories — a watch for the diver who also happens to be a movement connoisseur, or the chronograph enthusiast who takes their instrument literally into the deep.
