About This Watch
Among the most technically ambitious complications in the Ulysse Nardin catalogue, the Classic Ulysse Anchor Tourbillon in 44mm 18K white gold represents the full flowering of a research programme that reaches back to the brand's 1846 founding in Le Locle. The tourbillon was devised by Abraham-Louis Breguet as a means of countering the positional errors introduced by gravity on the lever escapement — but Ulysse Nardin's answer to escapement inaccuracy is categorically different. The Constant Ulysse Anchor Escapement in silicon is the brand's own patented mechanism, a constant-force device that delivers a perfectly regulated impulse to the balance regardless of mainspring tension, achieving the theoretical ideal of chronometric consistency that the tourbillon merely approximates by mechanical averaging.
Caliber UN-178 drives this complication by hand-wind, a deliberate choice that places the winding ritual at the centre of the owner's daily relationship with the watch. Its 170-hour power reserve — just over seven days — is a direct consequence of the silicon escapement's exceptional energy efficiency: where a conventional escapement dissipates significant energy through friction and the lubrication that friction demands, the silicon Anchor Escapement operates with near-frictionless precision, allowing the mainspring's stored energy to sustain the movement across a duration unachievable by conventional means. The flying tourbillon, operating without a top bridge, is presented with the visual openness that the translucent blue enamel dial further amplifies.
That dial is the watch's second act of artistry: genuine grand feu enamel, fired at temperatures exceeding 800 degrees Celsius onto its substrate, acquiring in the process a translucency that allows the movement architecture beneath to remain visible through the glass depth of the dial surface itself. The 18K white gold case, with its rhodium-rich pallor and sharp lugs, frames both the dial and the tourbillon cage with the restraint appropriate to a complication that needs no further decoration. A leather strap with simple buckle maintains the classical presentation. Water resistance to 30 metres is appropriate; this is a watch for the salon, the collector's table, and the horological enthusiast who understands that the Constant Anchor Escapement is among the most significant mechanical innovations of the modern era.
