About This Watch

The flying tourbillon is among the most visually dramatic of all horological complications — a cage rotating once per minute, carrying the entire escapement and balance assembly, designed to average out the positional errors introduced by gravity's action on the oscillating components. In the Classic Ulysse Anchor Tourbillon, Ulysse Nardin deploys this complication alongside something rarer still: the Constant Ulysse Anchor Escapement executed in silicium, a proprietary escapement geometry that delivers constant-force impulse to the balance wheel regardless of the mainspring's state of wind. This is not merely a tourbillon watch; it is a horological argument about the fundamental physics of timekeeping, made visible through the sapphire dial and housed in 44mm 18K rose gold.

Caliber UN-178 is a manual-winding movement of exceptional ambition. Its 170-hour power reserve — more than seven days of autonomous operation from a single winding — is the product of a barrel and gear-train architecture designed for energy efficiency rather than compact dimensions. The silicium Anchor escapement, produced using deep reactive-ion etching technology from a single silicon wafer, operates without lubrication, resists magnetic fields that would disturb a conventional lever escapement, and maintains its geometry with thermal stability that steel components cannot match. These are not marginal improvements over conventional watchmaking; they are qualitative advances in the fundamental architecture of timekeeping.

The genuine translucent blue enamel dial is produced by firing powdered glass — tinted to the specific blue that Ulysse Nardin's ateliers have developed — onto a gold substrate at temperatures exceeding 800 degrees Celsius. The translucency that results is not a surface effect but a depth quality: light passes through the glass layers, refracts, and returns with an inner luminescence that solid dial materials cannot replicate. The 18K rose gold case, in its warm 5N alloy formulation, provides the precious-metal setting this complication demands. A leather strap with simple buckle completes an ensemble that represents the fullest expression of Ulysse Nardin's technical and artistic ambitions in a single wearable object.
