Crafted entirely in Rolex's proprietary 18 ct Everose gold — an alloy developed in-house to resist the fading that plagues conventional rose gold over decades — the Datejust 31 reference 278245 occupies a considered middle ground between the Lady-Datejust 28 and the unisex 36 mm. The 31 mm Oyster case is sealed to 100 metres water resistance and secured by a Twinlock crown, its proportions refined through multiple generations to suit a broader range of wrist sizes without sacrificing the architectural presence the Datejust has maintained since its 1945 debut. A domed bezel in matching Everose gold frames the dial with restrained elegance.

The chocolate dial is one of Rolex's more distinctive colour executions, its rich brown lacquer serving as a foil for six diamond hour markers that replace the conventional index at the six o'clock position. The remaining hours are set with individual brilliant-cut diamonds, each individually selected and set by Rolex's in-house gem specialists. Cyclops lens magnification at three o'clock amplifies the instantaneous date display — a signature Datejust attribute — while the applied hour markers and slender baton hands are finished in 18 ct Everose gold to maintain chromatic coherence across the dial.

Power is supplied by the Calibre 2236, a movement developed specifically for the 31 mm and 28 mm Datejust family. The 2236 incorporates a Syloxi silicon hairspring — impervious to magnetic fields and thermal variation — and a Paraflex shock absorber system, delivering a COSC-certified accuracy of ±2 seconds per day from a 55-hour power reserve.
