Where the original Nautilus carried only time and date, the 5990 carries two time zones, a flyback chronograph, and a day/night indicator — a density of complication that would challenge any case, let alone one that must also satisfy the aesthetic demands of the Nautilus's horizontal-stripe dial and integrated bracelet.

The blue/black dial solves the legibility challenge with characteristic Patek Philippe authority. Two distinct zones — home and travel time — are organised across the dial's surface with an economy that makes the watch feel serene rather than busy. Index markers in the Nautilus tradition provide the hour reference, while the chronograph sub-dials and flyback pusher at ten o'clock introduce the functional overlay without disrupting the visual rhythm.
