About This Watch

Few mechanical objects in the history of twentieth-century design achieved the cultural longevity of the Reverso. Created in 1931 at the request of British polo players who needed a watch robust enough to survive the demands of sport, the pivoting case was an engineering solution that accidentally became an aesthetic revolution. The Reverso Classic Medium Duetto — priced at $14,400 — takes that founding impulse and multiplies it: one flick of the wrist rotates the case on its gliding carriage to reveal a second, entirely independent dial on the verso, animated by the same Calibre 968A automatic movement threading through the tonneau-shaped case.

In stainless steel, the Duetto wears with the architectural crispness its Art Deco origins demand. The obverse dial presents hours, minutes and seconds in classical Reverso fashion — Roman numerals, dauphine hands, a discipline of line that refuses the superfluous. The verso pivots to reveal a second face dressed differently, offering its wearer not merely a practical second time zone but the private pleasure of a watch that changes identity on demand. The Calibre 968A brings self-winding convenience to a case that once required only manual discipline, its rotor oscillating silently behind the scenes without disturbing the visual purity either face presents.

The Reverso Classic Duetto is simultaneously museum piece and daily instrument. Its proportions — the medium case size threading the needle between a lady's watch and a full dress piece — make it genuinely unisex in the truest sense, not as a marketing category but as a functional reality. La Grande Maison has produced more than 1,200 calibres in its 190-year history; none resides in a case more historically significant than this. To own a Reverso is to carry a fragment of 1931, still ticking.
