About This Watch

Commemorating the fifteenth anniversary of Grand Seiko's inaugural Spring Drive chronograph, the SBGC249 marks its milestone with a piece that advances every parameter its predecessors established. The Evolution 9 case — at 45.3 mm diameter, 15.8 mm height, and 52.6 mm lug-to-lug — is rendered in High-Intensity Titanium, an alloy twice as hard as conventional grade-5 titanium and significantly more scratch-resistant, yet retaining the material's defining property of wearing far lighter on the wrist than its presence would suggest. The sapphire bezel insert — itself a significant engineering choice for a chronograph-sport reference — resists the surface scratching that afflicts ceramic and even PVD-coated alternatives, maintaining visual integrity across years of active use.

The Cosmo Blue dial, protected by a dual-curved sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating, anchors a dial layout of unusual legibility for a complication-rich reference. Evolution 9 Style hands and applied hour markers — both generously coated with LumiBrite luminescent compound — provide immediate time readability under any light condition, while the repositioned chronograph pushers sit closer to the case body than previous generations, reducing accidental actuation and improving ergonomic control during single-hand operation. A limited edition of 700 pieces, the SBGC249 carries the rarity its engineering justifies.

Caliber 9R96 powers the SBGC249, a Spring Drive chronograph movement with integrated GMT function and an 18-karat gold medallion on the oscillating weight — a decorative acknowledgement of the movement's prestige. Grand Seiko specially adjusts each 9R96 to a rating of ±0.5 seconds per day, or ±10 seconds per month — a specification that places this chronograph in direct competition with observatory-certified mechanical movements at a fraction of their visual complexity. That a chronograph incorporating a GMT complication can meet such a standard reflects the fundamental advantage of Spring Drive's electromagnetic regulation over conventional mechanical control.
