About This Watch

Designed for those who demand their instrument accompany them beneath the surface as readily as across a boardroom, the SBGE253 represents Grand Seiko's most technically complete expression of the sport watch form. The 40.5mm case pairs stainless steel with a zirconia ceramic bezel — a material chosen for its exceptional hardness and resistance to the fading and discolouration that afflicts painted aluminium bezel inserts over years of exposure. At 14.7mm in thickness, the case accommodates the full architecture of Calibre 9R66 without visual excess, a proportion that speaks to careful ergonomic as well as aesthetic consideration.

Calibre 9R66 introduced GMT functionality to Grand Seiko's Spring Drive lineage in 2006, adding a fourth hand — a 24-hour GMT indicator — to the existing hours, minutes, and the signature glide-motion seconds. The calendar-linked time-difference adjustment function allows the local hour hand to be corrected in single-hour increments while the GMT hand and calendar maintain their reference time continuously — a practical architecture for frequent travellers that eliminates the frustration of date correction after crossing the international date line. Accuracy of ±1 second per day and 72 hours of power reserve complete the specification.

The black dial's LumiBrite application is generous and precisely placed — both hands and applied indices carry the photoluminescent compound, ensuring maximum legibility at depth where ambient light fails rapidly. The screw-down crown and case back, combined with 200-metre water resistance, make this watch a genuine diver's instrument rather than a mere aesthetic nod to aquatic life. A power reserve indicator and dual-time display visible at a glance round out a feature set that elevates the SBGE253 to the top tier of luxury sport diving watches in current production.
