About This Watch

Two milestones converge in the SBGC247: the twentieth anniversary of Grand Seiko's first GMT complication and the fifteenth anniversary of its inaugural Spring Drive chronograph. Rather than producing a nostalgic retrospective, the Shinshu Watch Studio chose to push both disciplines further — housing them in a 43.5 mm high-intensity titanium case of substantial presence yet notable lightness, and dressing the dial in a surface that captures the raw, wind-sculpted texture of late-winter snowpack as seen from the studio's own windows against the Hotaka mountain range.

The chronograph mechanism is where Spring Drive's regulative advantages become most tangible. Because the glide-wheel regulator operates continuously rather than in discrete ticks, the chronograph hand halts instantaneously at the precise moment of button depression — not at the nearest beat but at the exact instant, with no rounding error. Elapsed time measurement is thus accurate to a half-second per day even as the mainspring depletes, a characteristic that a conventional lever escapement cannot replicate. The specially adjusted movement is certified to ±10 seconds per month, and the 18-karat gold lion emblem on the rotor — visible through the see-through caseback — serves as the formal mark of that enhanced specification.

Blue accents scattered across the dial echo the vivid cerulean of Shinshu's winter sky, a chromatic decision that prevents the textured white surface from reading as austere. Issued as a limited edition, the SBGC247 occupies a rare position in Grand Seiko's catalogue: a watch that is simultaneously a commemorative document of technical lineage and a fully functional instrument of considerable sporting capability, equally at home measuring elapsed laps as it is resting in a display case.
