Nanbu tekki — the iron casting tradition of Morioka in Iwate Prefecture — has been practised continuously since the Edo period, producing objects whose distinctive arare, or hailstone, surface texture has become synonymous with enduring Japanese craft excellence. For the SBGK017, Grand Seiko's dial artisans have translated this three-dimensional texture onto a dark gray dial surface in stainless steel, creating a visual and tactile depth that no printed or lacquered finish could replicate. The result is a dial that resonates with cultural weight far beyond its material composition — a contemporary watch carrying four centuries of craft heritage on its face.

Calibre 9S63, the ultra-slim manual-wind movement at the heart of the SBGK017, was selected specifically to enable the dressier case proportions that a watch of this character demands. Its architecture incorporates a small seconds register at nine o'clock and a power reserve indicator at three, both rendered with the hand-bent hands that pay homage to classical watchmaking traditions. The curved dial and curved sapphire crystal create a coherent visual flow from bezel to bracelet, emphasising the sculptural quality of the Zaratsu-polished case surfaces, which are finished using a proprietary curved-surface polishing method developed exclusively at the Shizukuishi manufacture.
