About This Watch

The Chronomètre à Resonance is the watch for which F.P.Journe is most celebrated among mechanical purists — a timepiece that exploits the physical phenomenon of acoustic resonance to synchronise two independent oscillating balances, each regulating its own going train, toward a shared frequency that delivers a timekeeping stability beyond what either balance could achieve alone. The principle was demonstrated by Antide Janvier in the eighteenth century; Journe became the first watchmaker in the modern era to revive and productionise it, housing Calibre 1520 in a 40 mm platinum case whose density and acoustic damping properties are engineered to sustain the delicate sympathetic coupling.

The grey guilloché dial — finished in the maison's exquisite Clou de Paris hobnail pattern over a gold base and then treated with a silvered grey — is arranged asymmetrically, the two time-zone displays disposed to left and right of the case centre, each with its own small seconds subsidiary at 6 o'clock. A 24-hour subdial assists in distinguishing AM from PM in the secondary timezone; the power reserve indicator completes the functional suite. The arrangement is instantly recognisable as a Journe, and within that, instantly recognisable as a Resonance: no other watch dial is architecturally symmetrical in quite this way.

The open case back reveals Calibre 1520's manual-wind movement in solid 18-karat rose gold, the two balance wheels visible and, to the trained eye, running in measurable coordination. Worn on black alligator, this Chronomètre à Resonance at $170,700 in platinum is the complete expression of Journe's scientific convictions: a watch that uses physics itself as a complication.
