About This Watch

Resonance, as a horological principle, was known to astronomers and clockmakers centuries before François-Paul Journe revived it. The phenomenon — two pendulums or balance wheels in proximity synchronising their oscillations through the medium of a shared structure — was documented by Christiaan Huygens in the seventeenth century but never successfully deployed in a wristwatch until Journe's intervention. The Chronomètre à Résonance is thus not merely a complicated watch; it is a working proof of a physical principle, a philosophical statement rendered in gold and sapphire.

The 40mm 18-karat 6N gold case houses the manually wound Calibre 1520, whose twin independent movements — each displaying its own time zone via dedicated left and right analog displays — interact through resonance to achieve a mutual timekeeping stability neither could reach alone. The gold dial, worked in a combination of Clou de Paris hobnail and guilloché engine-turning, presents this technical complexity with extraordinary serenity: two subdials at opposed positions, twin small seconds indicators at 6 o'clock, a 24-hour display, and a power reserve indicator, all arranged with the mathematical precision of a scientific instrument.

The open case-back reveals the remarkable dual-movement architecture in its full splendour: solid 18k rose gold bridges and plates, the twin regulation systems visible side by side. Worn on a black alligator strap, the Chronomètre à Résonance at $167,000 is among the most intellectually extraordinary wristwatches ever produced. Owning one is less a luxury than a responsibility to understand what Journe has achieved.
