About This Watch

The Chronomètre Optimum represents François-Paul Journe's most thorough rethinking of the mechanical escapement — a component unchanged in its fundamentals for three centuries. By introducing his bi-axial EBHP escapement, Journe eliminated the conventional lever's energy losses and recoil, allowing the Calibre 1501 to deliver a dead beat seconds display of astonishing precision: the seconds hand advances in crisp, instantaneous steps, each jump marking exactly one second without the hesitation or drift that plagues conventional mechanisms. Seventy hours of power reserve, indicated on a subdial, underlines the efficiency of the system.

This 42 mm example presents in 18-karat 6N gold — Journe's signature alloy — whose deep, honeyed warmth suffuses the entire aesthetic. The dial, in gold and silver with guilloché decoration, organises its functions with the logical clarity that characterises every Journe design: the dead beat seconds at a prominent position, the power reserve indicator counterbalancing it, small seconds completing the symmetry. An integrated 18-karat 6N gold bracelet with folding clasp brings the case and band into a continuous, seamlessly flowing composition that is both comfortable and visually sumptuous. The open caseback reveals the rose-gold movement, its architecture a declaration of the manufacture's philosophy.

Water-resistant to 30 metres and cased at 42 mm, the Chronomètre Optimum on its gold bracelet is the most complete statement of Journe's reforming impulse in the Souveraine collection. To wear it is to carry on the wrist not merely a watch, but an argument — rigorously constructed and brilliantly executed — that mechanical horology is still capable of meaningful innovation. At $180,200, it commands the premium its singular engineering unequivocally deserves.
