About This Watch

The Chronomètre Optimum is F.P.Journe's answer to a question that occupied the finest horological minds for three centuries: how to eliminate the inefficiency of the lever escapement's sliding friction. The solution, realised in calibre 1501, is the EBHP — Échappement à Bascule Haute Performance — a bi-axial escapement in which the impulse is transmitted through rolling contact rather than sliding surfaces, reducing friction losses to negligible levels and dramatically improving the energy transfer between mainspring and balance wheel. It is among the most significant escapement innovations of the modern era, and it lives inside an 18-karat 6N yellow gold case of 40 mm — gold of unusual purity whose warm, slightly reddened tone distinguishes it from the more common 3N alloy.

The dial offers a composition of gold and silver in guilloché: the central zone finished in hand-engraved patterns that shift between geometric precision and organic flow, the chapter ring in silver providing tonal contrast and legibility framing. Dead-beat seconds — a seconds hand that steps in discrete one-second increments rather than sweeping continuously — appears here not merely as an aesthetic choice but as a direct expression of the EBHP escapement's characteristics. Hours, minutes, a small seconds counter, and a power reserve indicator complete the functional display, the 70-hour reserve providing more than two days of untended running.

The 18K 6N gold integrated bracelet and folding clasp bring the entire watch into a unified statement of material consistency — case, movement bridges, and bracelet sharing the same warm alloy. The open case back is an invitation rather than an afterthought, revealing calibre 1501 in its full rose-gold splendour. Priced at a level that acknowledges the rarity of what it contains, the Chronomètre Optimum is a watch for the collector who measures significance in escapement geometry.
