The year 2022 marked the Royal Oak's fiftieth anniversary, and Audemars Piguet chose to commemorate it not with a limited edition encrusted in excess, but with a collection that returned to first principles — and in doing so produced some of the reference's most sought-after variants. Reference 26240ST is the 50th Anniversary chronograph in stainless steel, housing Calibre 4401 within the clean architectural frame that Genta's original concept demanded. The 41 mm octagonal case in polished and brushed steel, sealed by a screw-down crown and closed by a transparent sapphire caseback, is as structurally faithful to 1972 as fifty years of refinement permit.

Calibre 4401's flyback chronograph mechanism — built around a column wheel, vertical clutch, and integrated architecture — brings a modernity of function that the anniversary edition deserves. The blue Grande Tapisserie dial is the centrepiece: a deep, almost galactic blue that shifts character across changing light, its raised-square guilloché texture catching and fragmenting illumination in the manner that has made AP dials a study in decorative precision.
