Gerald Genta conceived the Royal Oak in a single overnight session in 1971, his brief to make a luxury watch in stainless steel — a material then considered beneath fine watchmaking. The audacity of that origin story permeates every Royal Oak produced since, including this 37 mm rose gold variant with diamond-set bezel and grey Grande Tapisserie dial, where the sporting pedigree is dressed in unambiguously precious materials.

Calibrated by Calibre 3120 — Audemars Piguet's in-house automatic with a 60-hour power reserve — the movement operates at 21,600 vph and provides the characteristic Royal Oak functions: hours, minutes, centre seconds, date, and dive-time measurement. The calibre's 280 components are assembled entirely in Le Brassus, finished with côtes de Genève on the bridges and a circular-grained mainplate, and visible through the glareproofed sapphire exhibition caseback set in the 9.8 mm-thick 18-carat pink gold case.

The grey nickel-toned dial — finished with the Grande Tapisserie guilloché — reads cooler and more understated than its brown-dialled sibling, offering a different emotional register without surrendering any sophistication. Applied pink gold hour-markers and luminescent Royal Oak hands ensure legibility. The integrated 18-carat pink gold bracelet with AP folding buckle completes a watch that is, at 37 mm and 9.8 mm, both discreet in presence and exceptional in execution. Water-resistant to 50 metres.
